German biometric software for fingerprint recognition gains top position in test

The fingerprint recognition algorithm of a Munich biometric company gets first place in the recently released study BioFingerI initiated by the german federal office for security for information technology (BSI)

Bonn / Munich, 30th July 2004 – The BSI initiated the project BioFinger I to evaluate the performance of several biometric systems with respect to integrating fingerprints in german identification documents. Testing of seven recognition algorithms was done using fingerprint images generated by eleven different fingerprint sensors. To determine the performance level each algorithm was tested with each and every sensor.

As a result of these tests the product from Bromba GmbH, Munich achieved the top place as the most effective biometric software for fingerprint recognition. Compared to the lowest ranked product the Bromba algorithm performed three times better.

“Of course we are proud of this result. Especially if one considers that we were in competition with algorithms which previously won similar studies done in the USA”, said Manfred Bromba, CEO of Bromba GmbH. His company was founded no more than a year ago with former biometric specialists from Siemens AG. It was at Siemens, more precisely at the department for program and system development in Graz, Austria, where the program was initially developed. Today Bromba's team continues to develop and distribute this software.

Amongst Bromba's customers is the Deutsche Börse Group, whose employees are already using the fingerprint recognition system when logging into the company network with their notebook whilst off premises.

About the project BioFinger I:
The BSI initiated and financed this study. It was carried out by the Fraunhofer Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung (IGD) between December 2002 and May 2004 adhering to requirements developed by the BSI in cooperation with the german federal police department (BKA).
Further information about the study BioFinger I (the Bromba/Siemens-algorithm is listed as A4) can be found at: "http://www.bsi.bund.de/literat/studien/BioFinger/index.htm"
